Here are some of the skills that we work on with our early spellers. Improving their skills in these areas will develop their overall spelling ability.

1. Segmenting
Children need to be able to segment the sounds quickly in a word before they spell it. For example, to spell the word “pink,” they need to be able to identify each of the individual sounds (e.g. “p…i…n…k”).

2. Write the Sound
Practising writing individual sounds helps build a child’s letter-sound correspondence. We focus on a small number of letters to practise first (e.g. If we are working on Unit 1 in Sounds Write, we would use “m, s, t” to start with).

3. Letter Formation
Early spellers usually need extra practise in forming their letters so they can increase their writing speed. This activity is great for home practise.

4. Identifying Letter Names from their Sounds
We practise this skill for consonant sounds and vowel sounds. This helps down the track when children learn that sounds can be represented in more than one way and when we begin to refer to the letter names (e.g. the “k” sound can be written as a <c>, <k>, <ck> and sometimes <ch>).

There are so many different skills involved in spelling. Children need to be able to complete a variety of skills at the same time. If they are having trouble with one skill, it will impact their spelling.

We break down all of the skills involved in spelling and target each individually. Children have lots of opportunities to practise each skill so they can perform these "effortlessly" or "automatically," which in turn improves their spelling skills.

On Friday The Helipad team headed over to Clayton

On Friday The Helipad team headed over to Clayton to volunteer at St Kilda Mums.

St Kilda Mums is a not for profit, volunteer-powered charity that works with their partners to distribute new and preloved baby goods and nursery equipment to families in need to give kids the best start to life.

Over the last few weeks, we have been collecting used bottles and cans from our team and Helipad families. We recycled these through the Victorian Container Deposit Scheme. With the help of these donations, we were able to donate:

• 22 packs of nappies
• 30 packs of sanitary pads for mothers
• 24 underwear packs for children

Thank you so much to our team and Helipad families for helping us make this happen!

Plus a BIG thank you to everyone at St Kilda Mums for having us and for all the incredible work you do 💙

We wore our colours this week to support Rare Disease Day!
We each brought in a colourful plate of food, which was enjoyed during our team catch up.

Rare Disease Day raises awareness for the 300 million people living with a rare disease around the world and their families and carers.

The long-term mission of the Rare Disease Day campaign is to achieve equitable access to diagnosis, treatment, health and social care, and social opportunity for people affected by a rare disease.

We are really excited for The Helipad's next chapter! We are shifting from a general speech pathogy clinic to focusing on supporting children with their literacy and language skills. We will be sharing our team updates, tips and resources on this page.
